HOW DID THE FIRST HOPPED BEER APPEAR?
Beer has been part of human life for millennia. For many, it symbolizes not only joy and celebration, but also a culture where traditions, innovation, and even mythology intersect. But when did beer first appear, and what was it like?
THE FIRST BEER MAKERS
The history of beer dates back over 7,000 years. Historians agree that the first brewers lived in Mesopotamia, in what is now Iraq, home to the Sumerian civilization. These ancient peoples not only invented beer but also left the first written records of it. Sumerian cuneiform tablets contain beer recipes and reflect its importance in religious and social rituals.
However, their beer was very different from what we know today. The beverage consumed by the Sumerians was more like a thick porridge made from corn or other grains, mixed with water and naturally fermented. This “beer-porridge” was not only a drink but also used as payment for labor and in ceremonial contexts.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST BEER LIKE?
Determining the exact taste and composition of the first beer is difficult, of course. But it clearly bore little resemblance to modern beer. It was murky and viscous — not something you could sip through a straw, but rather something you’d spoon out. It lacked any noticeable hop flavor, since only grains and natural fermentation were used. If we were to taste it today, we probably wouldn’t recognize it as beer at all.
ANCIENT BEER AND ITS LEGACY
Sumerian beer evolved slowly and spread across various cultures. For example, in Finland, people still brew traditional sahti, which retains many traits of ancient beer: murkiness, minimal filtration, and spontaneous fermentation. Sahti is still made using not only barley or wheat, but also ingredients like rye malt and juniper — a living echo of beer’s origins.

Over the centuries, beer has come a long way — from a thick brew in ancient Mesopotamia to the refreshing and light styles we enjoy today.
But it’s important to remember that beer is more than just a drink — it’s a part of history, culture, and tradition that has brought people together throughout human civilization.
Have you ever wondered if every beer you open carries millions of years of history and culture inside it?
